There’s something slightly weird about this scene. We are about to drive LEXUS LFA the daunting 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife track in Germany. In a LEXUS LFA. Okay, it’s the exotic LFA, a Ferrari-fighting supercar that will cost about $350,000. But the company built its reputation on smooth, refined, and perfectly nerve-calming cars, so why does the LFA exist? In what parallel universe is this thing remotely LEXUS LFA-like?

LEXUS LFA claims multiple justifications for the LFA program. The car, it says, casts a halo over the Lexus F line of performance machines. It’s also a way for Toyota to explore new technologies, particularly carbon-fiber construction. And since LEXUS LFA says it will be selective about whom it will sell to—car collectors and high-profile individuals who use the car rather than park it—the LFA should raise the cachet of the brand as a whole

For all that marketing happy-talk, the 2012 LEXUS LFA is a serious outlier in the Lexus lineup and has had a convoluted gestation. The program started in 2000, and LEXUS LFAshowed the first concept car at the Detroit auto show in 2005. Next, a convertible version appeared at Detroit in 2008, though it has since been canceled. In the interim,LEXUS LFA prototypes were spotted testing at theNordschleife, and further, two race-prepared carsentered the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 2008 and 2009. But until now, the company hasn’t said anything about production intent. LEXUS LFA is finally ready to admit that a mere 500 will be made, with production starting in December 2010.

Although it's probably difficult for most people to think of a nearly $200,000 automobile as "affordable," that's the position the Lamborghini Gallardofinds itself in within the Lambo product lineup. Since its introduction, the mission for this "baby Lamborghini" has been to maintain the style and attitude of Lamborghini Gallardo 12-cylinder cars but be more livable in everyday use. It's been a successful strategy, as there's been no shortage of takers who rightly lust after such a usable and alluring sports car. Without too much difficultly, one can claim that the Lamborghini GallardoLP560-4 is Lamborghini's best sports car ever. If there's anything lacking, it's the outrageous spirit and flair so often associated with the company's more expensive or legendary offerings. But the trade-off of a little spirit for a lot of functionality has been a good one, and there's no doubt that theLamborghini Gallardo is a true, world-class exotic.

Three years ago, NISSAN GTR made a decision to bring back the revered GT-R for another generation of production. NISSAN GTR also promised that the GT-R would be a world-class supercar, capable of competing with the very best that the world had to offer. NISSAN GTR promised that the car they delivered would be the start of a series of mind-blowing cars that would be sold under the GT-R nameplate. Three years down the road and NISSAN GTRhas just delivered on its last commitment with the heavily revised 2012NISSAN GTR.

There are numerous suspension modifications in the 2012 NISSAN GTR such as an increased front caster that grows to 6 degrees. NISSAN GTR also modified the rear suspension to improve its weight distribution and lower the center of gravity for the car.

The highest praise fo BMW M3 I can give a sports car is to say it performs well both on a track and while driving slowly around town. Why? Because anybody can make a no-compromises car that's fast on the track but beats you to death on the streets. Likewise, anybody can make a comfy boulevard cruiser that wallows around the track. What's tricky is hitting that balance.
One of the few truly awesome cars I've driven, the BMW M3 nails both the sport and the comfort ends of the spectrum. You can tell the BMW M3 if you want it to be sedate or scary-fast — and it listens.

We've become fairly accustomed to huge output from AMG-built engines, but most of those are housed in conventional steel models weighing quite a bit more than the 3800-pound, carbon-fiber-bodied MERCEDES BENZ SLR MCLAREN. This isn't exactly svelte when one considers that carbon fiber weighs half as much as steel. Mercedes claims 3.8 seconds for the 0-to-60-mph scramble, and we think that might be a conservative estimate.
